My Favourite Monkey

Find out why macaques have become the world’s most successful monkey, and how they play a part in human cultures everywhere.

Produced by NHNZ

More than any other primate, the lives of humans and macaques are intertwined. We both trace our origins to Africa, and after humans, macaques are the most widespread primate group on earth. They are found from north-western Africa through to the eastern most tip of Asia.

Macaques have cultures, and pass on newly learned behaviour to other members in their group. They are world travellers and, with no fear of water, have colonised numerous islands, aided by their ability to eat almost anything and by their prolific reproduction.

Wherever they are found humans have an enduring relationship with these cheeky, intelligent and enterprising creatures. My Favorite Monkey is a global celebration of this relationship.
