Forest and Bird disappointed by Westport mine plans

An environmental lobby group says it's saddened by a decision to allow a mining project to go ahead near Westport. The West Coast Regional Council says consent has been granted, subject to conditions, for the Te Kuha Mining Project. The controversial proposal attracted more than 740 submissions and triggered a nine-day hearing. Forest and Bird's Canterbury/West Coast regional manager Jen Miller told RNZ's Tracy Neal the decision did not come as a surprise.
