Urgent boost to identifying risks from landfills

Work to identify risks from old landfills is set to get underway this month. The Ministry for the Environment has announced a multi-agency effort to get a better picture of the risks associated with current and closed dumps. The move comes after a storm in March exposed an old council landfill at Fox River which spilled tonnes of rubbish along the riverbed and coastline. Local Government New Zealand estimates there are 112 landfills near waterways.
