White Island hosts 3000 pairs of gannets, which gather in a colony at the southern side of the island across summer.

Produced by New Zealand Geographic

Now late-March, many of the chicks have fledged and the colony has thinned, leaving only stragglers developing their primary flight feathers to take the plunge from cliffs and into a new life at sea.
